Highway 12, Outer Banks Lifeline, Is Under Siege by Nature
This is a good example of the conflicts with sea level rise and increased storm events and the location of housing developments. In this case, the Outer Banks are home to some of the most celebrated beach communities. NC 12, the road that links them, is repeatedly flooded and washed out, illustrating the difficulty of maintaining houses, condos, roads and other infrastructure in the face of sea level rise. Here financial gains from tourists and wealthy homeowners are pitted against state costs for road maintenance.
